Drone Flying Permission- Legality

In India, flying drones is regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. As of my last update in January 2022, the legality of flying drones in India depends on several factors, including the drone's weight, purpose of use, and whether it is for commercial or recreational purposes.

Here are some key points regarding drone flying permissions in India:

Categories of Drones :

The DGCA categorizes drones into five categories based on their weight:

  • Nano (up to 250 grams)
  • Micro (251 grams to 2 kg)
  • Small (2 kg to 25 kg)
  • Medium (25 kg to 150 kg)
  • Large (over 150 kg)

Drone Flying Permissions:

  • For Nano drones used for recreational purposes, no permission is required as per the latest regulations.
  • Micro, Small, and Medium drones used for recreational purposes require registration on the Digital Sky platform.
  • For commercial use, all drones (Micro to Large) must be registered on the Digital Sky platform, and operators need to obtain Unique Identification Numbers (UINs) and Unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit (UAOP) from the DGCA.
